On December 4 a group of Bast Hatfield employees volunteered with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. That evening we were responsible for inspecting and sorting what is known as “freezer salvage”. Freezer salvage includes meat, pre-packaged deli items and heat and serve food that is about to expire, so the items are frozen and then donated by local grocery and big box stores.
In two hours our group of 17 went through 14,951 pounds of freezer salvage!
The food bank services 23 counties, from Plattsburgh down to Newburgh. They provide over 30 million pounds of food a year to 1,000 agencies, and they are the only organization of its kind in Northeastern New York. If you would like to learn more about the food bank and what they do, click here.
